2020 Is Over

It’s kind of awkward to be a Texan right now and joke about 2020 being gone and 2021 being here considering the fact that we’re still thawing out.

What a year already.

But baseball is here and we’re back for season 3 of our show.

If you’re looking for baseball talk thats:

  1. Positive and fun
  2. Respectful
  3. Focused on the soul and heart of the game and where that soul lives.
  4. Not surviving on hot takes and trolling
  5. Doesn’t rely on the lowest common denominator to make the show happen.

Then we’re the show for you.

In the premiere of every season, and sometimes in random episodes, I start with a quote. This season’s quote couldn’t be more fitting. Check out the premiere to find out what it is. We call that a tease.

2021 will eventually become more normal. We’ll get to the ballpark. Transport through time and space to the first time we went, heart the crack of the back, ate a hot dog thats a bit too messy and stretched in the 7th. We’ll get there.

We’d be honored and humbled if you come along with us as we journey through what we hope will be a season of catharsis and healing.

Let’s Get Two.

Baseball Talk In 2020…

There are lots of reasons I decided to do this show. Obviously, I love the game, I think I have a different view of the game, a unique relationship with the game and was searching for a creative outlet after leaving film.

With 2020 becoming the disaster we’ve all experienced, it was important for me to try to formalize what I wanted the show to be.

The biggest thing I wanted to maintain in our show was tone. The fact is, we knew we would have to be active on twitter. Have you been on twitter lately? It’s awful on its best day. But to grow the show, we knew we had to be involved and we really wanted to make sure we had a purpose and that we interacted with people in a kind way, with a positive, welcoming tone. We celebrate fandom, we don’t care if you’re a Gateway Grizzlies fan or a New York Yankees fan. Baseball is great. People who love baseball are mostly great. And our focus is mainly the beauty of the game focusing our lens on the MiLB, Collegiate Summer League and Independent Baseball: the game at it’s purest.

But let’s be honest, many people on Twitter are out there being trolls, they are throwing bombs with fake accounts and seeming to take a sense of pleasure in upsetting people, in adding a little extra misery to fan bases they deem unworthy. In 2019, that made you an awful person. Who does that? In 2020, it makes you even worse. We have a pandemic, we have a divided political culture. The economy in the US is contracting. We have so much going on. So what does it say about someone who gets some kind of delight by being a prick on twitter? And I know, it’s yelling into a hurricane. Or, ‘old man yells at cloud’.

So, we on this show, will maintain our very different tone. Because any other tone would make me depressed. I’m a smart dude with a sharp wit and I can go toe to toe with anyone. But when I’m done, I honestly feel bad for going after someone and lowering myself to a level.

The fact is, there are lots of roads we travel, lots of paths that lead us to logging into Twitter. Internet tough guy doesn’t impress me. I’m an Army vet. Did over a year in Bosnia where I saw shit that no one should see. Mass graves. A hand grenade tossed in my direction. The results of a little kid falling into a minefield.  And more. So, all this tough guy twitter talk? Unimpressed. The desire to make people feel worse just cause? Over it.

I’m unapologetically an Astros fan. I’ve become the Astros fan other fanbases will hold up as “reasonable.” While it’s a compliment, I’m far from the only. I know lots of Astros fans. Many of my favorite people are Astros fans. So, no, not the only one.

Conversely, I’ve seen a Yankees fan mock a cancer patient for wearing an Altuve jersey. The story of my grandson being called a cheater by an Ms fan. I don’t judge every fanbase by them, so maybe we should all admit that there are loud, obnoxious percentage of everyone’s fanbase and look each other as humans instead.

If I could waive my hand and fix things, it would go like this (for example) Yankee fan should be able to celebrate every home run. every Cole K, Judge homer without some jackass posting the Chapman/Altuve walkoff.  Conversely, I should be able to talk Astros with Astros friends and not have to worry about some moron posting trashcan memes. Let’s just acknowledge that life SUCKS. and not try to make it suck more for other people.

So our show will always be positive. We’re not going to attack other fans. We’re not going to isolate, we’re going to welcome. And we’re going to help you find other shows and twitter folks who do the same thing: bring some positivity to it. And at such time as people we have on our show, or people we recommend behave in a way that’s overtly negative, going after low hanging fruit, they will no longer be associated with the show.

We know we could get greater notoriety by going full troll, but we couldn’t live with ourselves doing it that way.

We’re just going to be us. People who love baseball and who love people who love baseball.

Thanksgiving!

I know, I know. Thanksgiving is for football. And it is. For me, it will be all about the Cowboys on Thursday and the Longhorns on Friday, in between turkey-induced comas.

As we end November and move into the end of the year, we get one day closer to pitchers and catchers for 2020, and further away from 2019; it has me thinking fondly on the season past. So, for my 2019 baseball season, I’m thankful for:

  • My baseball traveling partner: my wife. She loves the game so much. We saw walk offs, we saw championships, we saw some blowout losses and wins. And we met some of the best people across the country.
  • Spending four games with my two year old grandson and my wonderful daughter. We saw games in Seattle, Tacoma, Round Rock and Houston. Seeing her teach him the game…it’s the best.
  • I’m thankful for Andy, Nathan, Scott and Timothy, who you’ve heard on our show. We’ve been all over the country going to games and their buy in on the show’s concept has been humbling to say the list.
  • To all the folks who listened to our show. Our show is intentionally NOT going to be controversial. It’s not going to be the ‘hot take’ show. They are exhausting. They are soul sucking. And sometimes, I really believe they bring out the worst in us. So we’re going to celebrate the game that we love and leave the other things to people who frankly do it better. People who have access. And instead, we’re going to focus on the game and what it means to people, particularly those not in the 30 MLB cities. So thank you to our loyal listenership.
  • Thank you to all who have come on the show. The fans of the program who thought they had something to add…and did. The GMs, marketers and radio folks from all the MiLB teams who gave us access to that world and their individual teams. It was honestly life changing.
  • To all the fans, be it at Astros away games or any number of the MiLB and indie league games we met. So gracious and polite and welcoming. We made friends and shared some great times with everyone we met. Small parks, big parks: the game, even with all the drama in the MLB now, the game is strong and in good hands.

So thank you. For being a part of Let’s Get Two.

We’ve got one more episode and then we’ll be back next year! And we’re going to be out and about. Here’s a list of where we’re gonna be in 2020 with more trips still to be planned.

Again, to every listener, collaborator, thank you. The show has been a dream come true and we owe you all so much.

In March, Jess and I are going to Spring Training! So stoked! We’ll spend most of our time at the Astros/Nats facility.

In May, we’re gonna hit up Astros @ Blue Jays, the Buffalo Bisons and Rochester

We’ll be in New York in June of 2020 for Astros @ Mets, the Trenton Thunder and Rays @ Yankees.

Later in June, we’ll be in the Bay area for Astros @ Oakland, The San Jose Giants, The SF Giants and the Cali League All Star Game the Stockton Ports.

July we’ll be out to see the Lexington Legends and Louisville Bats. We’re also setting trips to see the Eugene Emeralds, Hartford Yard Goats, Hillsboro Hops and Omaha Storm Chasers! It’s gonna be fun.

Like I said, we’re gonna be busy. Have a great Thanksgiving I hope your football allegiances do well, as long as they don’t counter mine. 😉

Thanksgiving episode.

Let’s Get Two!

Welcome to ‘Let’s Get Two,” a baseball podcast rooted in the fan experience! Rather than focus on ‘hot takes’ and stats like WAR and OPS+++, we’re gonna approach the game from the experience, the culture and the connection we have with it. Our focus will be nationwide and really looking at the MiLB, college and independent baseball.

Thanks for stopping by! Can’t wait for the season! GPhsJOfWTdSFDQ0vImyLWA
